A New Future – Chapter 1

Catherine remembered it like it was yesterday. It was a day that began like any other. She woke up early that spring morning and hopped into the shower to get ready for work. She worked as a nurse in a hospital about 30 miles away from her mountain cabin in Virginia.  She remembered putting on her scrubs and grabbing a bite to eat on her way out. As she ate, she looked out her kitchen window. Catherine loved that window’s view. Well, actually all the windows in her cabin had beautiful views, one of the back pastures, one of the mountains, and the others of the old barn and her garden. The reason those little details were so clear in her mind was that it was the last time she would use a toaster to make raisin bread, and, the last time she would drive her car. It was the last time she would listen to music on the radio and the last time she had running water.

So much had changed in the last 2 months since “it” happened. The “it” was what her neighbors referred to as massive power grid failure.  In reality, it was most likely an EMP or Electromagnetic Pulse launched by some terrorist group that put America, as she knew it, into the dark ages. Cars stopped running. There was no electricity, no communication, no TV or radio. Nothing. Instantly life across the United States turned back 200 years.
